Bar Stool Buying Guide – How to choose the right bar stool

Bar stools are always a welcome addition to the likes of kitchens, games rooms and outdoor areas. However, going out and buying some isn’t always the right thing to do. Instead, there are a few things that you should consider – no matter how prepared you think you are.

To ensure that you have a new set of bar stools in your home as soon as possible, you may benefit from our handy little buying guide, detailing a few things to think about before you get shopping.
In no particular order, here are a few things you may want to ponder when buying bar stools.

Be materialistic

When shopping for bar stools, you’ll likely come across ones made from wood, plastic, metal, or a combination. As a general rule, wood tends to offer a more homely, rustic look, whilst metal and plastic offer a more modern and crisp feel.

Of course, the material that you choose is likely going to be influenced entirely by personal choice, but it’s worth bearing in mind that some wooden options won’t feature a gas-lift height adjustment system.

Upholstery or no upholstery?

Some stools may feature some form of cushioned upholstery, while some others may not, and may simply consist of a flat surface of wood, metal, or plastic.

Upholstered bar stools will – of course - be much more comfortable to sit on, which makes them a preferable option in dining or bar areas where they will be sat on for extended periods of time.

If your bar stools aren’t upholstered, don’t worry, as separate cushions can often be purchased.

Need to rest up

If comfort and support are priorities of yours, aim to purchase bar stools with arm and back rests. Both can come in a variety of different lengths/heights, so it’s always best to try a few different stools out to determine what you like.

Height matters

Wherever you plan on placing your stools, it’s crucial that you make sure it can easily be used. If it’s going underneath a bar – which is the most likely scenario – make sure to measure from the floor to the bar, and then make a note of this measurement.

Making appearances

Practical things aside, it’s wise to consider the style or colour of barstool that you want. As well as your personal preferences, it’s wise always to take into consideration the decor and colour scheme of the room you plan to place your stools in into account.

For example, if you frequently change the room’s decor or colour scheme, opt for neutral coloured stools – such as black, white, or wood. If your room features a lot of striped decors, try and purchase a stool featuring a striped pattern.  For warm-coloured rooms, look for similarly warm-coloured stools, etc. Follow these rules, and you should prevent your stools from clashing or looking misplaced. This is just a guide, though – if you like the look of a stool even though it doesn’t conform to these guidelines, go for it!
