Choosing Bed Linen

Choosing Bed Linen

Linen has been used by kings, queens, emporers and conquerers throughout the generations. In Ancient Greece, the high priests would wear linen clothes, and even the famous Alexander the Great wore a special armor made of linen. The first flag in Russia that was approved by Peter the Great was linen made, and Russia even used to have festivals where linen clothes would be worn. Linen was also an important fabric in the Hebrew temple, and it was the linen supply in Egypt that was effected greatly by one of the seven plagues.

There is an incredible amount of choice when looking at linen for the bedroom – top sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers and more. Your choice of linen styles, linen sizes, colors and patterns abound. Here are some tips to help you make the right decision when purchasing bed linen :

Measuring and what to buy

Measure your bed and know for sure what it is you're going to need. Don't forget to measure the thickness of your mattress as well – many people forget about this when buying fitted sheets for linen. Rather opt for a bigger linen size if you're not sure, and – as far as length goes - it's better not to buy the typical king or queen sizes of linen. Look out for fitted sheets with elastics all the way around, as they pop off a lot less.

Fabric choice

Natural linen fibers are really the best, the most comfortable and easiest to keep clean. Pure cotton linen is great for the skin, and also keeps cool during hot summer nights. Natural linen also don't hold onto body odors and oils like polyester blends do. A good choice here in linen fabric is pure Egyptian cotton and Supima or Pima. These cottons have longer fibers, which means they make a stronger thread and ultimately a stronger fabric. They also tend to get softer and more comfortable over time.

Thread count

Thread count means how many threads run up and down through a square inch of fabric. Thread count usually ranges from 80, but can go up to 1000. Higher thread count doesn't guarentee a better durability or even softness. 200 to 220 is an average thread count, good for daily use. 230-290 is much better but 300 to 400 is the best choice.

Some quick linen care techniques :

1)    Don't use harsh detergents. Remember, hard water can also contribute to a hard wash for linen. Use fabric softener if you have to, but not too much.

2)    Don't leave your linen in the dryer for too long – and also don't leave them in there on a high setting. Take the linen out while it is still a little damp.

3)    Wash linen once a week. Three complete sets of sheets are usually a good idea.

So, next time you're buying bed linen, consider these quick and easy tips to buying the best linen that will last you a lifetime and bring wonderful comfort to your sleep.
