Educational toys: do they work

There has been a lot of debate among Australian toy experts lately about the efficiency of today’s educational toys. Do the educational toys of today work as well as the makers of the toys claim they do? Are there any negative affects from these toys? The answer, of course, varies from person to person and family and family. Some families find toys to work for their children while another family may find that the same toys to not help at all. I know a lot of children that, as soon as they get a hint of educational toys, will immediately turn off their minds to those toys.

We need to understand that education is not just about numbers and knowledge; we need to allow toys to educate our minds and bodies as well. There are a lot of computer games and electronic toys out there that are more than just fun. Some of the new toys and game systems help with hand eye coordination and reflexes. The Nintendo Wii, for example, allows the users to become actively involved in the games. The controller has a wand attachment that allows this interaction, but there are also more add-ons that make this toy even better for the users. One of the new favorites that have come out are the boxing gloves:

These toys help with muscle and hand eye coordination. What is the draw of this toy? It’s a computer game. With the way that people in today’s day and age are, they are all about the computer games and the electronic toys. The average teenager spends an average of two hours a day playing with electronic toys. So if we make these toys educational, then that is toy hours that are used training the mind. There are even toys such as “Brain Academy” that are used to sharpen the mind and reasoning skills.

There are also toys that are more traditional, such as board games that require the mind to be sharp and to work thought problems within the game to win. These toys might be harder to get a child interested in, but if you start them out younger with these toys, then they will grow up with more of an appreciation of these toys. Even though I am an adult and have access to a lot more things to do with my time, I still have loyalty to some of the toys of my youth. My friends and I still gather at least one night a week to have a game night where we play these old board games.

So when it comes to educational toys, you need to decide on what toys work for you. The other important thing when it comes to these toys is that you need to get children interested in them. Children follow our example, even when it comes to toys, so you need to show an interest in these toys and also be willing to play with your children. A little will go a long way.
