There has been a huge increase in the sales of indoor toys over the last decade. This is partly because of the advancement of technology and electronic toys and also because of the lack of advancement in standard toys. Children have become more dependent on the visual appeal of electronic toys and the like. Some of the advantages that these have over more standard toys are that they are more prone to help the development of hand eye coordination at a faster pace than most other toys. Because they are more appealing to a child, they tend to spend more time with these toys than they do with most other toys.
While this does seem like it could be a definitive advantage over the toys that we grew up with, there are still a lot of advantages in the toys of old that we need to consider. The more standard toys cause children to be more active than the electronic toys and related toys do. They require the output of energy to make them work and for them to be fun. Children become more active with these toys, and they keep the children healthier than the computer ones do. Of course, they also put children at the mercy of the hot Australian sun in the summertime, but that’s a necessary tradeoff.
These types of toys can range from bikes and jump ropes to toy cars and dolls. Even a regular box can be used as a toy with a little imagination. I can remember when I played with my yo-yo all the time. Just by getting into it, I was able to start doing tricks as did my friends. For a year at least, it became the favorite of all my toys as we each kept trying to out do the other.
It is no wonder that in the last few years, this has become the most overweight and unhealthy generation of all times. So when you start thinking about what is better between outdoor toys and electronic indoor toys, you have to start balancing out all of the data and the facts. Both types of toys are important. It is up to us as parents to help our children make the best decisions. Yes, this does include what kind of toys that they play with.
I do not think there is honestly a good answer to the question of which is better between outdoor and indoor toys. Just like anything out there, you can argue for and against each. Some could say that indoor toys are better because they keep children out of the harmful rays of the sun and indoors where they can be watched. Others say that outdoor toys like one of those electric toy ride-on bikes are better because they allow for more interaction between children from the neighborhood and develop good social skills for later in life. So you need to figure out what kinds of toys are best for your children and decide on the best balance between the two different kinds of toys are. You could do what I do: I allow my children a half an hour with indoor toys for every hour they spend with outdoor toys. I found that this works best for my family. |
